Total Ear Canal Ablation and Lateral Bulla Osteotomy Coconut Grove Fl

When dogs have repeated and long term ear infections, they can suffer from permanent damage to the ear canal. Inflammation in the ear canal causes it to turn to bone, making it almost impossible to get rid of the ear infection with medications. The ear drum can also rupture. To get rid of the infection and the pain your dog is suffering from, a surgeon removes the entire ear canal. The bulla, also called the middle ear, is opened up and the infected tissue is removed. There is no opening to the ear canal and only an ear flap remains. Loss of hearing occurs in the ear that undergoes the surgery.  Recovery of the surgery is relatively quick, with the dog only needing to spend about a day or so at the hospital after the procedure.  Your dog might also need this surgery is if he or she has cancer in the ear.
